NORTHS BACK TO WINNERS LIST
An impressive exhibition by Norths PNG connection saw them overwhelm the Gold
Coast Breakers to race out to a 33-10 lead, before letting the Gold Cost back
into the game, which ended up 33-26.
To the Breaker’s credit, they gradually worked their way back into the match,
and secured 2 valuable bonus points.
Norths PNG inside centre Roland Namo bagged 4 tries in an impressive display,
with fellow countryman Shadrach Ghabila scoring one.
Ghabila, who was playing in only the seventh game of rugby in his life, having
come from a basketball background, got over the line twice, but dropped the ball
unmarked, after an intercept, when he attempted to place it with one hand.
Norths PNG outside centre David Eri was superb in defence and orchestrated his
countrymen in a number of dangerous breakouts, for which the Gold Coast had no
real answer.
Norths 18 year old Number 8 Ita Lieutenne had another superb game, and was a
major headache to the Gold Coast defence with his bullocking runs. He was joined
by QR Red Leroy Houston off the bench at ˝ time who also played strongly.
Qld Country Heelers No 7 Will Andersen made an impressive debut for Norths
before succumbing to a groin strain.
With Australian Under 20’s Blair Connor set to return this week, and their PNG
players now finding their feet, Norths have served notice that they are by no
means a spent force and remain a serious finals contender
.
Whilst happy with the win, Norths Head Coach Chris Roche was disappointed with
his team’s defensive lapses. “ We had the opportunity to put a huge score on the
Gold Coast after half time but instead let them back into the game.
This game was a salutary lesson to our players that all teams play for 80
minutes at this level and its not over until its over, “ he said.
“Having said that, I urge all Norths Supporters to come to next Saturday’s home
match at Shaw Road, against Qld University. We greatly appreciate the support,
and can assure everyone that our lads will throw the kitchen sink at every
opponent we come across in the 5 remaining rounds of the competition. We have
come from 9th position to the top 4 and we have no intention of surrendering
this lightly.”
