QAS Reds Academy Players shine in Aussie 7s

'Blair Connor - from ARC to Aussie Sevens'

Monday, 4 February 2008

QAS Reds Academy players Scott Higginbotham and Blair Connor have played leading†roles in the Australian 7s team’s improved performance in the†Wellington leg of the iRB World Sevens Series.
Australia utilises the 7s program to promote and develop some of the country’s best up and coming talent – an objective not lost on the two players or the QR Reds who are following their progress keenly.
Victories against Kenya, France and Scotland in the quarter finals gave† Australia its first shot at†the semi finals in this years series and was an improvement†on†the opening legs late last year in Dubai and South Africa.
Flanker Higginbotham†and†outside back Connor, who†were exposed to higher level rugby in last year’s Mazda Australian Championships, both started†in the semi final against New Zealand. They were down just 10-7 at halftime but the Kiwis proved too strong in the second half, winning†32-7.
QAS Reds Academy Head Coach Paul Carozza sees†tremendous value in exposing his†players to international 7s and hopes it assists them in gaining professional contracts in the future.
“Sevens provides an environment where you have to turn up and showcase all your skills in a pressure situation. The†players that can consistently achieve this even at a young age are usually the ones that can step up to Super14 rugby.
"We are very happy to have Blair and Scott involved with the national 7s team and watch†their performances very closely. They have both worked very hard so far in the academy program, but also know they have plenty more developing to achieve before they reach the top levels.”
Fellow Queensland-based player Kasey Mitchell also played a key role in Australia’s success.
